of days earlier the Danish Consul General in
Hamburg had been in contact with
Reichsstadthalter Karl Kauffmann, with whom he had
arranged for the Scandinavian prisoners assembled
at Neuengamme to be sent to Denmark
immediately. When the Nazi party representative in
Hamburg heard about this, he at once got in touch
with Himmler, who evidently knew nothing
about the arrangement. Himmler gave orders that
no transportations of any kind should take place.
He also stopped the transfer of sick Scandinavians
that had been going on for some time between
Neuengamme and Sweden.

The atmosphere at Friedrichsruh was gloomy
when I arrived there, and it did not cheer me up
when the German liaison officer informed me that
in his opinion the chance of getting the transfers
continued was very small. However, the same
evening he looked me up after dinner and told me
that the whole camp at Neuengamme was to be
evacuated immediately and the prisoners
transported to Denmark.

I subsequently heard the explanation of this
sudden change of plan from Himmler himself.
