outside in the square, and when I went to the
window I saw thousands of people running in
every direction. Hipo-men had appeared in their
cars and were sweeping the square with
tommy-guns. The fusillade was, however, not very
serious, and I could not see any casualties. But the
incident made me understand better than anything
before how great must be the Danes’ hatred of the
German invaders and, still more, of such of their
countrymen as had entered into the service of the
occupying power and become traitors to their
own country. These Hipo-men, in their dark
blue uniforms, made a vile impression on me. They
were young hooligans enjoying the power they
still possessed, well knowing it would soon be
taken from them. To me, a member of a neutral
nation, this episode had great significance. It gave
me an insight into the sufferings of the Danish
people during the hard and trying years of the
occupation.
I conferred with the representative of the
Swedish Foreign Office, von Post, and
Schellenberg likewise with Dr. Best. After that I gave the
King of Denmark a brief résumé of the situation.
