brought to see what kind of men the leaders of
the Third Reich were. My experience tells me
that they were men completely lacking in moral
conceptions and human stature. In the final act
there they were, with their hideous pasts,
desperately intriguing among themselves, yet at the
same time endeavoring to take shelter behind each
other’s backs, cowardly, undecided, irresolute.
The final act of the drama of the Third Reich
lacked any dignity or tragic quality. It was merely
ignominious, because all the dramatis personæ
were themselves ignominious and petty. They
were not fighting for an ideal, a belief, a
conviction: they were fighting merely for their lives,
besmirched with crimes that could never be
expiated.

Let us glance briefly at the leading figures of
the Third Reich as they appeared in its thirteenth
and last year. Take first the Führer. Already
Grand Admiral Dönitz has introduced the legend
that the Führer died the death of a hero, fighting
for his people on the Occident’s last barricades
against upsurging Bolshevism. We shall see that
in the best-informed German quarters a quite
