Schellenberg’s Story
for Germany that a counterbalance to it be
created. It was my belief that the only one who
could create it was Himmler. It was in this spirit
that I attempted to approach him and to obtain
such an influence over him that his power would
be turned in the desired direction. It was my
conviction that Germany must in one way or another
disengage itself from the war with the Western
powers.
However strange it may sound, there was at
the time of my appointment no real political
intelligence service in the Third Reich. And there
was even less understanding of its importance. It
was regarded as superfluous for the simple reason
that the Third Reich did not require
information about the internal situation in other
countries; the Third Reich could do without that. This
opinion was shared by Hitler, who was
completely opposed to me on this subject, as was also
Ribbentrop. The only one who showed some
interest was Himmler. But even he created
difficulties for me, enslaved as he was by the prejudices
created by the basic ideas of National Socialism,
