Schellenberg’s Story
as well as by his own tendency to estimate
political events with the mentality of a police official.
It was only by slow degrees that I was able to
bring about a change in his attitude.
As the military and political situation became
more critical my position became more difficult.
I became the object of special notice and interest
on the part of the Gestapo and the Security Police.
My most active and dangerous enemies were
Reichsleiter Bormann and the head of the
Security Police, Kaltenbrunner. In regard to
Kaltenbrunner especially, I had to show great
caution. As far back as eighteen months earlier he
stated that he had complete evidence of my being
employed by the [British] Secret Service. He did
everything in his power to trap me.
This was the situation when, at the beginning
of February, the German Minister in Stockholm,
Thomsen, reported that you were about to start
for Berlin in order to see Himmler. Twice that
day Ribbentrop sent Geheimrat Wagner, his
personal secretary in the Ministry for Foreign
Affairs, to see me in order to try to find out if it
