Schellenberg’s Story
see you, and in this way Himmler would gain
time and see how things developed.
That is how it came about that Kaltenbrunner
and I were able to see you. From the very
beginning I had a feeling that I had made a useful
contact. I saw in your visit the last opportunity of
realizing what had always been at the back of
my mind: in some way or other to steer Germany
out of the war. I also made up my mind that a
meeting between you and Himmler had to be
arranged, and as soon as you left me I set about it
in the following manner:
I complimented Kaltenbrunner on the
remarkable way in which he had conducted his
conversation with you—a perfect example of
Austrian “ballroom diplomacy.” There was
something that I had long wanted to say to him, and
I had now decided to bring it up in the course of
my next meeting with Himmler. It was this: that
in the present desperate situation Ribbentrop
must be removed and Kaltenbrunner appointed
Minister for Foreign Affairs in his place.
Kaltenbrunner swallowed the bait so readily and with
