Schellenberg’s Story

such enthusiasm that I found it difficult to control
the situation. When, after that, we telephoned
to Himmler, Kaltenbrunner insisted with
burning conviction on the importance of your
meeting him, even though Hitler had definitely
forbidden it. When your meeting took place
Kaltenbrunner was not asked to attend, and that
made him furious. He sobered down, and soon
he was showing himself to be as hostile to me as
ever. After your first meeting with Himmler the
intrigues began again. Kaltenbrunner heaped
reproaches on me because I had made the
Reichsleiter altogether too well disposed to you, and
he enlisted the services of Gruppenführer Müller,
the brutal administrative chief of the Gestapo,
who made every kind of objection to the plan
to collect the Norwegian and Danish prisoners
in Neuengamme. Among other objections he said
that the German population, especially the long
trains of refugees, must not be exposed to the sight
of Swedish Red Cross cars driving about the roads
at night with prisoners from the concentration
