Schellenberg’s Story
initiative. From that day—it was at the beginning
of March—there was a daily tug of war between
Himmler and me, although neither
Kaltenbrunner nor any other of the persons in Hitler’s
entourage was really aware of it.
In long talks with Himmler I tried to show him
that it was no longer a question of being true to
his oath to Hitler—who, as he himself always
maintained, was the real basis of the SS
organization—but a matter of life or death for the German
people. His reply was always: “Then what you
want me to do is to eliminate the Führer?” There
was a time when I couldn’t answer this question
in the affirmative, for to have done so would have
been to run the risk of being liquidated. That was
because the influence possessed by
Gruppenführer Fegelein, Obergruppenführer
Kaltenbrunner, Obersturmbannführer Skorzeny the
chief of the Werewolves, and others of their kind
was so great, especially as it rested principally on
their right to report personally to Hitler.
During these talks Himmler often spoke to me
about the state of Hitler’s health, which
