Schellenberg’s Story

Himmler at his headquarters and had it out with
him. I told him it was evident that Germany was
about to collapse, and that in this situation he
must on no account fail to make the most of your
presence in Germany. I said that he must try to
act independently in order to steer the German
wreck into a peaceful haven before it capsized,
and I suggested that he ask you to fly to General
Eisenhower and present to him an offer of
surrender. The talk became more and more
emotional as it went on. I said that Himmler’s proper
place was in Berlin and not with an army group,
that this was the second time that Hitler’s
entourage had succeeded in getting him away from
the capital, and I told him that he should return
there as soon as possible to prepare for peace, with
or without using force. At last Himmler gave
way. And that night I received very wide powers
to negotiate with you. However, the next
morning he rang me up, took back most of what he had
said, and authorized me only to maintain contact
with you and in certain circumstances to try to
persuade you to see Eisenhower on your own
