Schellenberg’s Story

must regard this as a symptom of Parkinson’s
disease (paralysis agitans). I thereupon arranged
a meeting between Himmler and de Crinis, to
which the Reichsleiter summoned the
Reichsminister of Health, Conti. It was evident that
Himmler was extremely interested by what he heard.

A few days later—it was on April 13th—
Himmler summoned me to his headquarters in Wustrow
and took me for a walk in the forest, where he
at last completely unburdened himself to me.
“Schellenberg,” he said, “I don’t think that we
can let the Führer go on any longer. Do you
believe that de Crinis was right?” I answered: “Yes.
True, it is two or three years since I have met
Hitler, but judging by what I can gather about
his recent behavior, I am convinced that it is high
time for you to act.”

But after a while Himmler’s vacillations began
again. It was clear that the breach between him
and Hitler had begun. Over and over he asked me
what he could do. He said that after all he could
not murder the Führer. He could not give him
poison, nor could he arrest him in the Reich
