Schellenberg’s Story

Chancellery, for in that event the whole military
machine would come to a stop. I replied that this
would not matter. There was only one way out.
He must present himself before Hitler, inform
him of everything that had happened recently,
and force him to abdicate. Himmler said that this
was absolutely impossible: the Führer would burst
into a rage and shoot him on the spot. “You must
take suitable precautions to prevent that,” I said.
“After all, you have a sufficient number of SS
men in high positions who are capable of
arranging an arrest of this kind. If there is no other way
we must get the doctors to help.”

Our walk lasted an hour and a half. Himmler
was not able to come to a decision. He said only
that he would arrange a meeting of Professor de
Crinis, Professor Morell, Hitler’s personal
physician, Doctor Stumpfegger, his second physician,
and Bormann.

A couple of days later I asked Professor de
Crinis what conclusion he and his colleagues had
reached. He answered rather disappointedly that
he had discussed with Doctor Stumpfegger
