Vad slutligen själva den språkliga konstruktionen J^e-
träffar, är det bättre ju mera prosaisk den är. »It is no
paradox, that the more prosaic the construction of verse,
the better. Inversions should be dismissed. The most
forcible lines are the most direct.» ^
Poe står i detta av-
seende närmare Wordsworth än Coleridge, i det den förre
hävdade, »that not only the language of a large portion of
every good poem, even of the most elevated character, must
necessadly, except with reference to the metre, in no re-
spect differ from that of good prose, hut likewise that some
of the most interesting parts of the best poems will be
found to be strictly the language of prose, when prose is
w^ell written» — ett uttalande vari Coleridge ingalunda vill
instämma, utan mot vilket han ganska skarpt polemiserar 2.
