PREFACE
FAR’s first Swedish-English dictionary was published in 1979.
An up-dated and expanded version appeared in 1981. On the
basis hereof FAR published in 1985 a completely new dictionary
being a combined Swedish-English and English-Swedish
dictionary. The Swedish-English section was based on FAR’s earlier
dictionaries but the vocabulary had been up-dated and
significantly expanded. The English-Swedish section was based on a
conversion of the Swedish-English section. This conversion
had been reviewed and supplemented by a substantial number
of English expressions, terms and designations which have no
direct equivalent in Swedish. The dictionary was published in
1986 in a second edition which included several additions and
improvements.
In this third edition of FARs dictionary further additions and
improvements have been made.
FAR’s dictionary is intended for users with a good general
knowledge of English. Synonyms are not given to the same
extent as in a conventional dictionary. Where a list of synonyms
is given, there are normally no individual explanations.
Words which are unique to American English are indicated by
the suffix AmE. Words which occur particularly in the United
States are marked with the suffix US. The corresponding
suffixes for British English words and usage are BrR and UK. Words
which primarily appear in spoken English are indicated by the
suffix coll (colloquial). Translations of uniquely Swedish terms
which have no direct equivalent in Britain or the United States,
such as the names of Swedish government authorities or
accounting terms which reflect the influence of the Swedish tax
system, are indicated by the suffix Sw.
The spelling follows British English usage. The suffix (z)
indicates endings of the types -ise and -isation where the use of
the alternative z is acceptable.
This dictionary has been prepared by Margareta Damberg,
Authorised Public Accountant and Deputy Secretary General of
FAR. Ronald Hathorn, Chartered Accountant, a partner in Price
Waterhouse, Stockholm, and Sigvard Orander of the law firm of
Carl Swartling Advokatbyrå, Stockholm, have reviewed the
translations and provided additional material.
