added up the necessary totals. Thereupon the final calculation of the
results was made on ordinary calculating machines and by the ordinary
methods.
The Hollerith machines could not be used for calculating the sample
plots, this work having to be done by the usual methods on ordinary
calculating machines, with slide-rules etc. The diameter series were
calculated according to species of trees, the average heights by graphic
smoothing, then the volume with and without bark, the increment
percentages, the annual growth etc.
Before the sample plots could be dealt with for calculating the
results, several special investigations had to be performed. On the basis
of the sample plots, by employing the methods of the theory of
probability, the ocular estimates of the leader of each survey group who
was a forester experienced in ocular estimating was checked and, if
necessary, revised before the survey materials were dealt with.
A detailed description of the methods of survey and calculation and
of the research material and results will be published at a later date.
