latter is worth referring to in broad lines. The figures in hectares
illustrating the division are given in Table 3.

It will be seen from the table that poor growing pine swamps by
themselves represent more than half, and in combination with the
spruce swamps, i.e. all wet land, two-thirds of the total area of the
class of land use. The remaining third is divided in approximately
the same proportions between poor forest growing fjelds and rocky
grounds, the latter also including the poor growing hill tops of North
Finland. If Table 3 is examined, great differences will be found in
this respect between the southern and northern halves of Finland.
A comparison between the division of the forest land of poor growth
on the present occasion and in 1922—23 shows some difference, though
not large. In general the estimation of land on the lower limits of the
classes of land use is stricter than before, as already mentioned.
c. Waste land.
In some statistical materials waste land and forest land form a
single group. From the point of view of forestry, however, waste land
should be regarded as a separate class of land use, seeing that in its
present condition, without draining or some other method of
improvement, it is incapable of growing forest. The sub-division of the waste
land will be found in Table 4 in hectares. Of the total area of waste
