dra första skriftliga spår till den sedermera så ryktbara Faust-
sagan. Den beribtan huru en Prepositus Theophilus förnekade
Gud och den Heliga Jungfrun, och skref med sitt eget blod
ett bref, hvaruli hon gaf sig med kropp och själ till djefvu-
len. — Derefter ångrar han sig med många bittra tårar, och
får genom Marias förböner hos sin Son nåd, samt erkåller det
olycksaliga brefvet tillbaka. Detta ämne har varit mångfaldigt
begagnadt och bearbetadt uti den ebristliga Medeltidens Legend-
samlingar, och icke sällan erbjuder det taflor, fulla af märk-
värdiga folk-åsigter och den skönaste poesi:
Mr. DasenUs vältaliga företal skulle vi gerna helt och hal
let hafva tillegnat OSS. Men då utrymmet icke tillåter detta,
vilja vi inskränka oss till följande utdrag (ss. V—YVD.
”And so may these legends of the apostacy and conver-
sion of Theophilus, which once rang throughout all Christen-
dom, from Spain to Iceland, again emerge into the light of
day as objects of zesthetic criticism, and stand tbe trial to
which each new generation summons those which bave gone ,
before it. Men may smile at them now as effete, but it were
better not to forget the respect due to their age, and to think
that they were once the comfort of many an aching heart,
and did good service in their day to the cause of Trutb, in
combating the dark powers of Hell and Death. To the mere
sceptical Understanding — that faculty which turns its plough-
share over so many blooming fields to sow them with barren
salt — it may seem absurd to reproduce the tale of a man
who sold himself bodily, to the Devil, and was rescued from
everlasting perdition by the interceession of the Virgin Mary;
but to the eye of Reason which sees far deeper, and argues
from principles of a higher Logic, it is elear that the interest
to be taken, the lesson to be learned, does not in the least
depend on the truth or falseness of the facts recorded in the
Legend; but on the fact that such things formed an insepa-
rable part and parcel of the Belief of Times, which acting
up to this faith did the ”day’s work of a Giant”, and left a
mark on the world not yet worn out; of an Age which ge-
nerated and fostered in its bosom the stod of. all our institu-
tions, and from which we are spiritually, as sel as Menatrsitrs
sprung.”
