OPTRYK 1812
Den engelske Oversættelse af 1742 blev optrykt i: Popular
Romances: Consisting of imaginary voyages and travels. Con-
taining Gulliver’s Travels, Journey to the world under ground,
The life and adventures of Peter Wilkins, The adventures of
Robinson Crusoe and The history of Automathes. To which is
prefixed an
introductory dissertation, by Henrv Weber. Edin-
burgh. 1812. S. 115—200.
Webers Indledning giver en kort og ikke videre korrekt Over-
sigt over Holbergs Levnet og Skrifter, hvor det bl. a. (S. XXX—
XXXI) hedder: »The »Journey ofKlimius« was soon translated
from the Danish into the Latin tongue, and from thence ver-
sions were made in French, English, and other European lan-
guages .... The satire being directed chiefly against the abuses
of the government, and the magistracy of Denmark, which
nearly coincide with those of Germany, was more
likely to
meet with success in those countries, than where the constitu-
tion is so widely different as in England. The French trans-
later, Mauvillon, accordingly adapted the allusions to his own
country; and had the English version been formed on similar
principles, the work would probably have attained more general
circulation in this country, where the reader cannot be supposed
to be so intimately acquainted with the chicanery, the ludicrous
pomp, and the vexations, and tedious sloth of Danish and Ger-
man burgomasters and aldermen. The other parts of the work
are more general, and therefore more calculated to piease in
other countries. It must also be observed, that the English
translation has a remarkable harshness and poverty of style,
whereas that of the Danish Original, as well of the Latin ver-
sion, are allowed to be very excellent .... The writer of these
introductory observations has not been able to ascertain, in
what year the work of Holberg first appeared. As it is, howewer,
known to have been composed some after his return from
travel, and before he attached himself to dramatic composition,
it may be presumed, that it was published before the work of
Swift. The latter appeared in 1726«. Efter denne misvisende
Udtalelse slutter han med: »Any comparison between their pro-
ductions is almost out of the question«.
