CHAPTER IX.
THE LIEUTENANT-COLONEL TAKES HIS #IEASURES.
ON the following morning about six o’clock, the chambermaid
entered, bringing în the coffee #vhich had been ordered. She
brought ai the same rime a glass filled #vith the most beautiful
flowers. A joyful "_Ah !" slil#ped ff’oto Amelia’s lips, and she
hurriedly threw ber hair bmids over ber comb, grasped the vessel
with both hands, #nd inhaled their fl’esh odour into ber litfle
nostrils. "Are # -ese flowers also 1o. ,#s #" inquired the lieutenant-
colonel, and yawningly extended his hand toward the coffee cup.
"They are for the young lady," replied the #rl, the gentleman
in number six sends his compliments, and says they are sent by
little Alfred."
"Chivalry bas hOt yet gone to the grave in Sweden," declaimed
the lieutenant-colonel solemnly, ai’ the same rime with the
greatest appetite helping himself to all the cakes which had been
brought for the ladies. When the chambermaid had gone, Mrs.
de Dressen took from ber little bag some home-ruade cake, wtfich
tasted excellently.
After a shor# rime the lieutenant-colonel, carefully shaved and
well-dressed, #ven.t upon deck. tte pretended fo walk up for the
purpose of enjoying the beautiful morning. But the truth was,
he was desirous of an ol#por#unity of finding out something con-
cerning the gentleman in number six, and therefore took Ms way
directly fo the saloon, #vhere he was so fortunate as fo find the
passenger-list, upon which, af the very end, was placed tho
"I. Borgenstierna."
" Borgenstierna, simply–-" muttered the lieutenant-colonel
