Madame de Dressen was too prudent a woman fo disclose ber
sentiments on this subject immediately, and fo present ber objec-
tions all ai once. With due presence of mind, she therefore
replied,

"You shall hear if immediately." With these words, the
lieutenant-colonel took the letter from his pocket, lit his pipe,
and sat down in the arm-chair, and began his important epistle,
in a low and mysterious voice :
