It was indeed a miracle that the lieutenant-colonel, at thîs
unexpected stroke, did hot throw open the vestry-room door,
and cry out fo the parson, "Say that once more." There was
indeed such an intention thought oi, and would bave been
carried into effect, had hOt a second, sober thought brought him
back fo his senses. :If suddenly occurred fo him how natural if
might be, that the old, near-sighted minister might have read
