MEDDELANDEN OCH AKTSTYCKEN
plain, to visit London, and lay the whole matter before the
Committee that he might receive needed advice or aid. Before leaving
a prolongation of the term of appeal from May 6th to July ist was
requested by Memorial to the King1, and the few lines left by his
own desire with Sir Thos. Cartwright, whose kindness the last ten
days especially of the Missionary’s residence was most marked.2
Some danger of a disturbance on the embarkation of the Missionary
was apprehended, but by prudent arrangements and the Mercy of
God he was spared such trial. A strong party of police were in
attendance, and the British Minister kindly came down to the Steamer
a full hour before the time of starting to afford such protection as
he could if needed. The day following the departure of the
Missionary the ist May, being a day of much general dissipation,
he is not without anxiety as regards his family necessarily left
behind.
An honest and unreserved narrative of the course of events
has thus been given, and it will be for the Committee to say what
is best to be done under the circumstances. To the mind of the
Missionary it appears indispensible that the respectability and proper
Christian influence of the Wesleyan Methodist connection needs to
be vindicated before the Swedish authorities and people, for at
present the too general opinion is that the Methodists are a despicable
party of fanatical schismatics who may be maltreated by any body
and every body with perfect impunity, only on this ground can we
account for many proceedings at once of the press, the community
and the Swedish government. This would best be accomplished if
the British Government could be induced to interfere for the
protection of all that can be brought under the cognizance of that
Government. An outrage against a British Subject has been committed as
appears by the proceedings of March 20th & 21st and the British
Authorities can at least insist that the rioters be brought to justice.
As regards the prohibition of the services by the Governor an
appeal may certainly be presented to the Swedish Monarch before
the ist July next, reminding His Majesty of his gracious Resolution
of Nov. 16. 1838, but the probable result of this would be the
suspending of the whole question, to remain undecided for years,
while in the meantime nothing could be done with the Chapel
property.
That property is secured by a regular and inviolable trust-deed
to the Wesleyan Conference; the services, Swedish and English, for
the due performance of which the place was erected, had existed
more than 10 years previous to the erection; and have been
conducted in the same manner since the building was completed. All
