westin, brev från john durie

2 o i

wards ye Lord Channc: in some good & reall busines, wherein both
himself & ye publique state of both kingdomes & ye Com [m]on
cause might haue benefit, but for a bare Complem[en]t I would not
wish him to take ye paines to come hither, for here wee are all
set vpon realities; you know Sr George his busines & I know hee
will offer to the Kinge from hence as faire as can bee expected,
so y:t in this subiect of publique affaires w:ch is ye onely matter
of imploym[en]t now acceptable I doe not see how hee can bee
imploved, but if any other occasion of credit in another kind
towards ye Q[ueen] from any of ye princes should fall out y:t would
bee a fit opportunitie.

All your demannds by your l[ett]res 1 will endeauour to satisfie
soe farre as is possible in this multitude of affaires. The Decretum
Comitis Lesnensis et Respo[n]sum Wittenburgicum is very acceptable
& will be of vse. I haue gotten againe l[ett]res from Polonia held
at Oxa1 w:th many subscriptions p[ro]misinge to Ioyne & further my
worke, likewise from Comenius in the name of the Synod held at
Thome.

[John Durie].

To [Samuel Har t lib]?
(Stockholm, J| Febr. 1637.)

Stockholme, tf Fehr. [1637].

In my last I did enforme you of ye L. Channc. resolucon to
take mee alonge in his company to Vpsall & soe to further ye
treaties to some period; you desire a latine & an english narratiue,
but it is Impossible to make it now till I bee at a further period,
wee must make vse of this w:ch wee haue, you would doe well if
you cause it to be printed againe, to leaue out ye passages of D:r
Boduidius & of Joh: Matthæi or else to set downe this: nam res
qui hoc studium p[er]mouere velie promisit.3 Here I distribute none
of ye Hypomnemata because of D:r Boduidius & Joh: Matthei, ye
one beinge soe highly discommended & ye other commended w:ch

1 Evidently some words missing.

2 Copy in Ravvl. Ms. C. 911 (BL), fol. 371 v. f.

3 What is referred to here, is a new edition of Durie’s Hypomnemata de stu
diopans Ecclesiastics (Amsterdam 1636), where, on p. 8, he had spoken rather harshly
of Botvidi (see my work Negotiations about Church Unity 1628—1634, p. 127).
Durie was therefore now eager to correct himself in a new edition. In the first
edition the passage ran thus: »Nam res D. D. Bodvidio per ipsum [Oxenstierna]
commendata fuit; & quamvis ab hujus austero & inhumano ingenio parum sperare
licuit» tamen etc. About Matthiae and his interest in the case Durie also used
more emphatical words than in the passage here proposed.
