SAMMENSETNINGER OG BRUKEN AV BINDESTREK A. 1. I ett ord, med trykk pà første ledd, som pà norsk: glassware, handsaw, postman, railway, shareholder, shipowner, steamship, typewriter, warehouse. 2. To eller flere ord med bindestrek: a) Substantiv + substantiv. (Trykket ligger på første ledd): bank-note, custom-house, motor-ship, office-boy, saw-mill, table-knife. b) Ordgrupper brukt som adjektiv: an up-to-date mill (men: the mill is up to date), a well-to-do man (he is well to do), a hand-to-mouth existence (he is living from hand to mouth), a dark-blue coat (the coat is dark blue), paid-up capital, ready-to-wear clothing. c) Adjektiv (adverb el. preposisjon) + fortidspartisipp: old-fashioned methods, a well-informed person (he is well informed), an old-established firm, the above-mentioned firm, new-laid eggs. d) Tallord + substantiv: a five-year plan, a three-inch belt, a four-power conference, a twelve-day tour. 3. Bindestrek blir brukt for à skille forstavelsens vokal fra ens vokal i hovedordet: co-operation, re-elect. 4. Bindestrek etter forstavelsene anti-, ex-, non-, post-, pre-, pro-, ultra-, i ord som: anti-British, an ex-director, a non-member, post-war, pre-war, pro-German, ultra-fashionable. B. 1. To eller flere ord kan pà norsk settes sammen til ett ord, mens disse pà engelsk står hver for seg og uttales med fullt trykk pà begge eller med sterkere trykk pà annet ledd: a) Substantiv + substantiv: agency business, branch office, business man, capital account, export trade, factory manager. b) Adjektiv + substantiv: net weight, private life, raw material, sole agency (men: a sole-agency appointment). c) Nåtidspartisipp + substantiv: forwarding instructions, packing material, travelling expenses, working capital (men: packing-case, travelling-dress, walking-stick). 2. Stedsnavn og andre geografiske navn, også brukt adjektivisk: the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Suez Canal, Central America, South Africa; a London firm, a Bergen newspaper, Paris fashions. 3. Institusjoner osv., f. eks. the Foreign Office, the Norwegian State Railways.
