far as to say that there vjould be an absolute in
compatibility, 1 can say, as far as f can see at
present, the difficulty of fullfilling both obligations
would be so great, that it would be almost neces
sary for us to rome to an arrangement, that should
be satisfactory on the one hand to Mr. Reuter,
and, on the other hand, to tue Submarine Telegraph
Company. A proposal from Mr. Reuter has been
put into my hands this morning ; I have not had
time to examine it, but, from a conversation I have
had with him, I have no reason to doubt that by
Thursdny, ive shall have come to a satisfactory
arrangement, and I have as Utile doubt that ive
shall also come to a satisfactory arrangement with
the Submarine, and with tue A tlantic and Anglo-
Ameri-an ( ompanies.
70.9. By the 8th clause of the agreement,
betweeu the Electric Telegraph Company and
the Reuter Company, they are bound to forward
by the said three wires (that is the Reuter Com
pany) „all messages collected or received by the
Electric Telegraph Company in the United King
dom for the following kingdoms and places,
Hannover", and other placjs; „and also by the
said three wires to send at least 200 messages
per day on the average." That would be an
obligation on the part of the Electric Telegraph
Company to send a definite dass and number of
messages by Mr. Reuteris wires? — Yes; we
must either fuilfiil that obligation, or indemnify
him for it.
710. How would it be possible, unless you
purchased bis concern, for you to fuilfiil that
obligation to him, and at the same time fuilfiil
the obligation on the part of the Magnetic Te
legraph Company towards the. Submarine Company
to send all the messages by their wires? — 1
would rather not answer that questionimmediately,
but I should be quite prepared to answer it on
Thursday morning, and, I think, ’ in a. way satis
factory to your clients.

that you have been in comnmnication with the
parties representing the Atlantic Cable Company?

kan indse, at Vanskeligheden ved at opfylde begge
Forpligtelser vilde blive saa stor, at det vilde være

ning, som var tilfredsstillende paa den ene Side
for Hr. Reuter, og paa den anden for Submarine
Telegraph Co. Et Forslag fra Hr. Reuter er

til at undersøge det, men efter en Samtale, jeg har
havt med ham , har jeg ingen Grund til at tvivle
om, at vi til Thorsdagskulle værekomne til en tilfreds
stillende Ordning, og jeg nærer ligesaa liden Tvivl
om, at vi ogsaa skulle komme til en tilfredsstil
lende Ordning med Submarine Co. saavelsom med
Atlantic og Anglo-American Co.
709. Ifølge den 8de Klausul i Kontrakten
mellem Electric Telegraph Co. og Reuter Co. ei
det første forpligtet til at befordre med de nævnte
tre Traade (det vil sige Reuters Compagni) „alle
Telegrammer, som ere saralede eller modtagne
af Electric Telegraph Co. i det forenede Kouge
rige til følgeude Kongeriger og Steder, Han
nover" og andre Steder; „og tillige med de
nævnte Traade afseude idetmiudste gjenuemsnit
ligt 200 Telegrammer pr. Dag," Dette vilde blive
en Forpligtelse fra Electric Telegraph Co.’s Side
til at afsende en bestemt Klasse og Antal Tele
grammer med Hr. Reuters Tiaade? - Ja, vi
maa enten opfylde denne Forpligtelse eller holde
ham skadesløs derfor.
710. Hvorledes vilde det være muligt for
Dem, med mindre De kjøbte hans Forretning, at
opfylde hin Forpligtelse til ham, og paa samme
Tid opfylde den Forpligtelse fra Magnetic Telegraph
Co.’s Side til Submarine Co. at sende alle Tele
grammer med dets Traade? — Jeg vilde helst
ikke besvarc dette Spørgsmaal strax, men jeg
skulde værefuldkommen forberedt paa at besvare
det Thorsdag Morgen og, som jeg Lror, paa en for
Deres Klienter tilfredsstillende Maade.

at De har været i Underhandling med de
Mænd, som repræsentere Atlantic Cable Co.?
