POSITION, AREA, AND NATURAL CONDITIONS
CLIMATE, FLORA, FAUNA
Norway forms the northern and western part
of the Scandinavian peninsula. Its superficial area
is 322,680 square kilometres. The southernmost
point of the country, Kraaga, near Lindesnes, is
situated in 57°57'31” N. Lat., and the extreme
northern point, Knivskjellodden, near North Cape,
is in 71°11'8” N. Lat. The westernmost point of
Norway, Stengy off Sognefjord, is 4°30'13” east
of Greenwich and the extreme eastern point,
Horngy near Vardg, is 31°10’4” east of Greenwich.
Norway’s length of frontier to Finland is 920
km. and to Sweden 1650 km. The coastline from
the Swedish frontier in the south to the Finnish
frontier in the north is 3400 km. in length, but if
the coastline in the numerous fjords is included
it gives a length of approximately 20,000 km. The
coast is girded with a string of islands numbering
something like 150,000. At some few points the
mainland lies open to the ocean, e.g., at Lindesnes,
Jeeren, Stadt, at North Cape and a few other
places; but practically the whole of the coast can
