Vesteraalen, where there is a small area of sand- stone and slate, formed in the later Jurassic period and the oldest part in Cretaceous times. Climate. Norway has an inland climate — warm summer and cold winter — and also a coast cli- mate with a comparatively mild winter and a cool summer. The annual mean temperature is below 0° C. in high-mountain districts and in Finmark. On the west and south coast it is 7°, in the north (Bodg) 4.1°. The highest recorded temperature is 35° C. (at Oslo) and the lowest — 51.4 (at Kara- sjok). Spring is the driest period in Norway. The latter half of the year has the greatest number of days of precipitation. The annual precipitation is least in @sterdalen (Rgros 457 mm), in the eastern districts and in inner Finmark (364 mm.). The west coast has the maximum precipitation, 2145 mm. at Bergen. The climate of Norway is mainly determined by the temperature of the surrounding ocean, which, as the reader will know, is warmed by the Gulf Stream. Flora. Of the superficial area of Norway, rivers and lakes occupy 13,275 sq. km., and glaciers (ice and snow) 5000 sq. km. In the other parts of the country there is a very diversified flora, whose wealth and density varies according to altitude and latitude. Something like 70,000 sq. km. of the area is forest. Of this, conifers (spruce and pine) occupy three-fourths and deciduous woods one- fourth. Grasses and flowering plants comprise 17
