about 1500 species. In the southern parts of the
country we find oak, maple, lime, and elm. Birch
is distributed throughout the country. The ordi-
nary cereals are cultivated everywhere except in
Finmark. Potatoes and various roots are also
grown in every part of the country. On the wood-
less plateaus above the timber line there is a
rich growth of grass which gives ample summer
grazing for the cattle from the valley farms.
Fauna. In Norway the fauna is both arctic and
boreal in character. In Finmark the reindeer,
white hare, polar fox, glutton, snow bunting, lem-
ming, and snowy owl occur in large numbers,
these being the same animals as are found in
North Russia and North Siberia. The arctic fauna
extends a long way south, but in the more southern
parts it is confined to the higher mountain tracts.
Of animals of more southern origin we must men-
tion first of all the elk, which is widely distri-
buted. Then there is the roe in the eastern districts,
and red deer in the west. The bear, lynx, wolf,
fox, otter, marten and stoat occur in practically
every part of the country. The bear is now
becoming rarer, and the wolf does not wander
farther south than Trgndelagen. The beaver and
the badger are confined to the south. Of birds the
ptarmigan, capercailzie, and black grouse are
very common. The partridge occurs only in the
