In that period appeared the new great names
in Norwegian painting: Fritz Thaulow (1847-
1906), Chr. Krohg 1852-1925), Edvard Munch,
(1863-), and Halfdan Strém (1863-). Of these,.
Munch in particular has won fame far beyond
the borders of his own country. A healthy realism,
marked by a strong social interest, but interpreted
with an inspiring impressionism and a strong
appreciation of nature, are the characteristic
features of the art of that important period. Munch
is the creator of modern painting in Norway, he
has formed a «school» with many imitators at home
and abroad. Among the painters of the ’eighties
we have also Marie Hauge (1864-1922) and Marie
Tannes (1864-).
In a class apart stands Amaldus Nielsen (1838-
1933) as being perhaps the most popular and
productive of Norwegian painters. A large collec-
tion of his paintings has been presented by his
heirs to Oslo City, and is preserved in a separate
building at the Oslo City Museum.
Younger painters include Ludvig Karsten (1876-
1925), possessing exceptional coloristic talent,
A. C. Svarstad (1869-), Thv. Erichsen (1869-),
Henrik Lund (1879-), Nic. Astrup (1880-1928),
Bernh. Folkestad (1879-1932), Arne Kavli (1878-),
Sgren Onsager (1878-), S. Torsteinson (1874-).
The youngest generation of painters in Norway
also numbers many good names, several of whom
