are painters of outstanding merit: Henrik S@rensen
(1882-), may be said to be the leader of these,
but Axel Revold (1887-), Alf Rolfsen (1895-), Jean
Heiberg (1883-), Per Deberitz (1880-), and Per
Krohg (1889-) are his contemporary equals.
Among the very youngest there is one in partic-
ular, Reidar Aulie (1904-), who has attracted a
great deal of attention.
Sculpture.
The fine old wood-carvings in Norway. partic-
ularly in the ancient churches, bear evidence of
a widespread and intense interest in this art. The
art of sculpture proper has however not had such
a remarkable and rich renaissance as painting.
The first sculptor was Hans Michelsen (1789-1859),
who had studied under the Danish sculptor Thor-
valdsen in Rome. The best known of Michelsen’s
works is the Twelve Apostles in Trondheim
Cathedral. He was followed by Julius Middelthun
(1820-1886) and Brynjulf Bergslien (1830-1898).
Of the latter’s productions the fine equestrian
statue of King Karl Johan in front of the Royal
Palace in Oslo is the most famous.
The first great sculptor in Norway was Stephan
Sinding (1846-1923). His best production is the
’Barbarian mother carrying her dead son from
the battlefield’. He has also executed the charac-
teristic statues of Ibsen and Bjgrnson in front of
