the National Theatre in Oslo, which have given rise to a certain amount of controversy. In his latter years Sinding lived in Paris. During the War he commenced the execution of a monumen- tal work, «The Offering», which he presented to the French Government. Of Sinding’s contem- poraries, although they were much younger, we may mention: Lars Utne (1862-1922), Gunnar Utsond (1864-), Ingebret Vik (1867-1927), Jo Visdal (1861-1923). The greatest of Norwegian sculptors is Gustav Vigeland (1869-). He is an exceedingly prolific, supremely versatile, and comprehensive artist, who successfully combines realism, vitality, and romance. He has executed a large number of excellent portrait busts, monuments, and other works. His greatest production is the grand fountain for Oslo City on which he is now engaged. He submitted plans for the construction of this fountain in 1900, since when the work has proceeded without interruption. The fountain itself as originally planned is finished, but it now represents only the central feature of a work in which a wonderful and widely diversified wealth of stone sculpture presents itself in a magnificent artistic composition, in which a twenty-metres- high monolith and the fountain form the central main features. The whole work is now in course of construction in Frogner Park, Oslo. On seeing the first plans of the fountain thirty years ago, Gunnar Heiberg wrote that Oslo would come to 68
