As befits one of the foremost seafaring nations, the Norwegian shipbuilding industry has attained a very high standard. The largest and _ best equipped shipyard in the country for both steam and motor ships is A/S Akers Mek, Verksted, Oslo, which has built the major number of the most modern and attractive types of ships in the Norwegian merchant marine. In addition we may mention the A/S Fredrikstad Mek. Verksted, noted for its special types. The Norwegian electro-technical industry is one of the youngest industrial branches in the country, but it has undergone exceptionally rapid expansion. Obviously, it has not nearly been able to oust foreign competition, but in respect of many articles the imports have begun to change char- acter, finished products having given way to raw materials and half-manufactures. As regards modern telegraph and telephone plant, Norway now oc- cupies a foremost place, and the A/S Elektrisk Bureau, in particular, have acquired a well-merited reputation as manufacturers of automatic telephone plants which satisfy the very highest standards of technical efficiency. In the electro-technical industry a world- embracing market has been built up, and the outstanding feature of Norwegian products under this head is the high quality and standardisation of types. This is the distinctive feature also of the electric cookers and heaters, of which large shipments are made to foreign markets. Of other 88
