to a certain time of the year. Pursuant to this
Act the Norwegian Government resolved on July
13, 1934 «that baleen whales may. be killed in
waters south of 50° S. only during the period
December 1—March 31». At the same time the
Government issued regulations as to the best
possible utilisation of the whale, and enjoined
the managers of whaling expeditions to take care
that they do not kill more whales than the fac-
tory has the capacity to deal with within thirty-
six hours from the time the whales are shot.
Factory ships and whaling boats (chasers) with
appurtenant equipment are not allowed to be sold
to any foreign country for a period of two years
from the date on which the Act comes into force.
On September 13, 1934 an Order in Council was
made prohibiting the killing also of blue whales
under 65 feet and fin-whales under 55 feet.
On the initiative of the Norwegian Government
the League of Nations passed a Convention in
1931, based on the Norwegian Whaling Act. The
terms of this convention totally prohibit the
killing of members of such whale species as are
becoming very rare and of young whales and
female whales accompanied by their calves. The
convention further determines that there shall be
co-operation between the Government of a country
and its whalers, and that all scientific information
relating to whale biology shall be sent in by the
respective governments to the Statistical Office
for Whaling in Oslo. The signatories to the
