TRAVEL Norway is the land of promise of the summer and winter tourist, for no other country in the world offers the traveller such distinctive, diver- sified, and interesting conditions of scenery and climate. The summer may be short — from the middle of May to the end of September — but it is in return of such fairness and splendour, and its climate is so genial, that it surpasses every other country in the same latitudes. Nor is the winter season in itself of long duration, for the transitional stages of spring and autumn make up about four months of the year. The ski-ing season commences at Christmas-time and lasts until the end of May. In the mountain districts the snow lies until late in May, and in some parts of the high fjeld ski-ing may be prac- tised also in June. Every part of the country offers facilities for ski-ing; foreign seekers of this healthy sport can begin at Oslo, or they may proceed to the upcountry valleys and to the moun- tains, where there are excellent ski-ing grounds and good hotels.
