The’ coastal districts of the south and _ south-
eastern parts of Norway are in great favour with
holiday-makers and summer travellers. The
scenery here has not that majesty and grandeur
which we find in the West and North, and in the
inner and central districts of Norway, but it is
winsome, idyllic, and untrampled; the climate is
dry and warm. Bathing can be enjoyed in a sea
as fresh and temperate as anywhere along the
north Continental coasts.
The part of Norway which is perhaps the most
interesting and attractive, not only to foreign
travellers but also to the Norwegians themselves,
is the North. The distinctive features of this
ocean-girt scenery are the rugged grandeur of the
coast, the peculiar formation of archipelagic
groups of islands with their wonderful alpine
mountain forms.
The Lofotens — that remarkable island- realm —
from which Norway’s greatest cod-fisheries are
carried on, lie there a wild but gloriously beautiful
wonderland in winter as well as in summer. But
in the inner stretches of the northern fjords
conditions resemble those farther south — mild
and idyllic. Another feature of the islands and
coasts of North Norway is the teeming seafowl
life, which never fails to arouse the greatest won-
der and interest. Over the whole of this magni-
ficent scenery the sun pours night and day, from
the end of May until the beginning of August.
