In no other country do the scenic and climatic conditions lend themselves so well to the enjoy- ment of the Midnight Sun — that marvellous revelation of Nature. It is rarely hot in North Norway, but it is always mild and pleasant during the period of the midnight sun. Every feature of the landscape assumes a strange entrancing hue when the midnight sun pours its flood of light over island, fjord, and field. Travel is easy and comfortable in Norway. The railway services are very good, equalling the best in other countries. Districts that are not worked by railways have good automobile services. Coastal traffic is maintained by large, comfortable liners, and in the summer season by special tourist boats. With frequent rail and steamer services Norway is also closely linked with the wider world. All the railway connections are naturally made through Sweden, crossing the frontier at four different points. From western and central Europe the routes lie through Denmark or via the train- ferry service across the Baltic from Sassnitz to Tralleborg. Express trains, with through carriages and restaurant cars, run twice daily in. either direction between Oslo and Berlin and Hamburg. The steamship services from England run from Newcastle-on-Tyne to Oslo and to Bergen. They are maintained by the comfortable mail steamers of the Fred Olsen Line and the Bergenske Line, which make several sailings weekly. 179
