De franska och engelska studentstilarne V.-T. 1899.

The master (teacher, tutor) who exercised (had) the greatest
(the most) influence on (who most influenced) the mental
(intellectual) development of Gustavus Adolphus (Of [Among] all
the masters of G. A. the one who exercised the greatest [the
chief] infl. on his mental dev.) was undoubtedly (unquestionably,
undeniably, indisputably) (, no doubt,) John Skytte. Skytte
(The latter) (He) was a very learned man (a great scholar) and
had (a very learned man [a man of great learning] and one who
had) acquired (gained, gathered) great and varied (manifold,
multifarious) experience (great [much] experience in many things
[matters, subjects]). He had lived (resided) (been residing) for
many years abroad (lived abroad for many years), and had
industriously (diligently, assiduously, unremittingly) pursued his
studies (had pursued his studies [had studied] industriously) (He
had spent many y. abroad and pursued his studies ind.)
at more than one foreign University (at several foreign
Universities). His efforts as an educator (His educational efforts)
were | quite | as much directed (calculated) to develop (form) and
strengthen (fortify) his young pupil’s character (the character of
his young pupil) as to increase (enlarge, widen) his | stock of |
(the bounds of his) knowledge (his book-learning) (advance his
studies) were as much directed to the development and
strengthening [bracing] of his ... as to the increasing [widening] of his...)
(aimed as much at developing and strengthening ... as at
increasing . . .) (aimed at developing and stengthening ... as well
as at incr.) (had in view not only to develop and strengthen...
but also to increase) (had as much for their object the
development and strengthening ... as the . . .) (His aim [The trend of
his efforts (labours)] as an educator was directed as much to...
as to . . .). It would be unjust (wrong) to speak either of (of
either) tutor (teacher, master) or pupil in terms other than those
of (in other than terms of) (but in terms of) (with any | thing|
hut) (with other than) the highest praise. Gustavus Adolphus
naturally possessed (had naturally [by nature]) (was |naturally|
endowed [gifted] with) an uncommonly (unusually, extraordinarily,
fam. extraordinary) (a remarkably) clear (keen) (acute) (brilliant)
intellect*) (sharp wit) (clear [’good’] head) and (coupled with)
a good memory. As (Even as) (When |he was| only) a child
(a young boy) (When a mere boy) he could speak (he mastered)
several languages and made such |good (rapid, startling)!

*) Jfr härmed: »Nothing in the world more suited to the simple
understanding than instruction through familiar types and symbols!»
(Mod. Eng. Förf, Wallbergs Fori. I: 27, 27).
