in these respects they are unquestionably deserving of attention.
Their authors are especially attractive, the more so because they
are to us so perfectly novel. The Swedish language is naive,
sonorous, and at the same time far from being deficient in softness
and musical intonation. The country itself, notwithstanding what
Dr. Schubert alleges on this point, is by no means a land of luxury
and comfort; we have there no Turkey carpets, or-moulu borders,
ottomans, lustres or candelabras. On the contrary, the
accommodations for strangers are, for the most part, detestable; the floors
are covered with fir-tree branches (!) instead of carpets, and
generally speaking, the comforts of life are inferior to what they were
in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth.»
Artikeln avslutas med tio rader om Marianne Ehrenströms lilla
bok — han karakteriserar den som catalogue raisonné: »we feel as
if we were only led to the gates of a wide and beautiful domain,
of which we shall at some future time explore and describe the
varied scenery», och upplyser till sist om, att han ur minnet
antecknat de svenska författarnas namn, innan han gjorde dess
bekantskap.
IV.
Jag har inte, som jag velat, kunnat följa artikelns vandringar
i olika länders press. Frånvaron av litteraturutdrag gör ju frågan
om ett direkt inflytande av ingen betydelse; att vederhäftigt
klarlägga möjligheterna för ett indirekt torde vara omöjligt.
I England blev Foreign Quarterlys första och även senare
nummer i allmänhet välvilligt omnämnda. I Atheneum t. ex. omtalas
båda tidskrifterna 1829. Jan. 7 s. 1: »The establishment of an
English Foreign Review marked, as it seems to us, the
commencement of a new era in our literature . . . Foreign Quarterly . . . seems
to us the best edited periodical in this country . . . The
contributors to the F. Q. R. appear to be in general men of strong and
matured minds, who have outlined the first love feeling which a
new literature inspires in persons just entering upon the study, but
who has gained in exchange a power and habit of surveying its
productions with as much sobriety as any volume in their own
language». Det bör tilläggas att i Atheneum visste man sannolikt,
vilka författarne voro.
