of disease were present as in the case of Penicillium sp. Some of
the bees ran around at a great speed while others showed signs of
great drowsiness. June 31. Several of the bees showed the typical
staggering walk, now falling on one side, now on the other. July 5.
Ten bees dead with more or less swollen abdomens. July 5. All
of them dead.
The contents of ventriculus and rectum were plated and the
fungus was recovered from both.
Series II.
July 23. 12 bees were used. 01 gram fungous material was
mixed in 10 c. c. honey. July 24. No sure signs of disease could
be detected. July 25. One dead; several wild and intoxicated.
July 26. One more dead; most of the rest drowsy. July 27. Five
dead, more or less swollen. July 30. Al but one dead.
Penicillium conditaneum Westling.
July 23. 12 bees were caged. 0.1 gram of fungous material was
mixed in 10 c. c. honey. July 24. Several sick having staggering
walk and glossy abdomens. July 25. Eight dead. A few dying
lying on the back unable to rise; other crawling around on the
side. July 26. All dead.
The bees fed on Penicillium conditaneum had the abdomens but
slightly swollen and considerably less than those fed on Penicillium
sp. and Mucor Mucedo (see below) The toxic substance in this
fungus acts very quickly as may be seen from the data above. It
is inferred that the bees are killed already before any considerable
quantity of food is taken in, which would account for the insigni-
ficant swelling of the abdomen.
Examination of the intestinal tract showed great masses of spo-
res particularly in the rectum. Some of the spores had germinated
producing germtubes and in some cases branched mycelium.
Mucor Mucedo.
Series I.
July 12. 15 bees used. 0.3 grams fungous material were mixed
in 5 c. c. honey. July 14. None of the bees dead, but nearly all
sick. Some of them were sitting in the bottom of the cage drowsy
and dull, other were running around at a great pace. When try-
