10. Acarospora Magnussoni Samp. n. sp.
Novos materiais para a Liquenologia Portuguesa (Boletim da Sociedade
Broteriana, Coimbra, Vol II 1924 p. 15).
"Thallus inconspicuus; apothecia solitaria seu geminata, 0.4—0.7
mm. lat, turgidula, disco leviter concavo, fuscidula sed humecta
rubescentia; excipulum evolutum, cortice indistincte celluloso; hi-
menium 175—190 & altum, J rubellulum; paraphyses longae, fili-
formes, eseplalae, ad apicem capitatac et obscuratae; sporae in
ascis numerosissimae, hyalinae, bacillariae: 3.5—5 X 1.5—2 u.”
Areolae separated by large spaces, dispersed in the inequalities
of the stone or rarely a few contiguous, 0.5—1 mm. broad, 0.4—0.6
mm. thick, blackish brown or dark pitch-coloured, more or less
irregularly round, depressed verruciform, opaque or slightly shining,
unaltered by KOH and CaCl,O,, largely affixed to the substratum,
with lower side of the margin blackish.
Cortex 35— 50(—60) u. exterior 8—12 u, in the margin up to
25 u, blackish brown, no amorphous stratum. Hyphae intricate,
thin, 2—3 mw, pachydermatous, with very small, 1 u broad lumina.
Gonidia yellowish green, 8—17 u, forming a very thin 8—25 u
broad, continuous line outside the excipulum, from one upper
margin to the other. Medulla very badly developed, hyphae 2—3 u
thick, somewhat firmly conglutinated. Lower cortex only visible
in the margins, blackish.
Apothecia mostly single or sometimes 2—4 in one areola, im-
pressed, more or less regularly round. Disc 0.2—0.4 mm. broad,
concolorous with the thallus, opaque or slightly shining, concave,
surrounded by the margin of the areola as a thick slightly elevated,
indistinetly limited margin.
Excipulum in the sides distinct, 15—25 u, white, consisting of
closely packed pachydermatous hyphae, strictly parallel, below
confluent with the badly limited, up to 100 u high hypotheeium.
Hymenium 150—200 u high, with J coloured blue or brownish
red, upper 15—18 u dark brown. Paraphyses coherent, in water
not discrete, in HCI distinct, 1—1.5 u thick, dark capitate, with long
not well observed articles. Asci 100—135 X 20—25 u, broadly elavate.
Spores many hundreds, more or less cylindric, 4—5 X 1.5—1.7 u.
