NOTES 89

JOHAN OLOV WALLIN.
Ur DÖDENS ÄNGEL.

"Dödens ängel” (The Angel of Death), despite its flaws
and imperfections, as noted in part below, has maintained
its position as the most popular of Wallin’s single poetic
achievements. Its fascinating elements are acknowledged,
and the poem has been rendered into English and published
by at least two translators (Almquist and Shaw). Other
poems of high merit are Wallin’s "Hemsjukan” (Longing
for Home), his poetice toast to the memory of George
Washington (1837), which at the time was thought so democratic
as to prejudice the pending election of Wallin to the
archiepiscopate, and particularly his early poem "Dityramb,”
subsequently made the prelude to a prize poem eulogizing
Gustav III. (1808). In Tegnérs "Sång till skånska
lantvärnet” (1809) and "Svea” (1811) many things, both in
form and diction, are reminiscent of that ringing
dithyrambic.

2. åter...om. Redundancy.

13. glada...trygga. Predicative aualifiers in lieu of
adverbs, a common usage.

15. fåglanästen, modern form, fågelnästen. The poem
abounds in old forms and expressions, savoring of the old
Swedish Bible.

23. fallets lucka (fallucka); compounds thus dissolved
into a simple noun and a genitive are not infrequently met
with in dignified prose; in verse they serve, furthermore,
as a rhythmical device.

24. med ett, in an instant,—=med detsamma (colloq. med
samma).

26. nedan, rare use of the word in the sense of pit, abyss.
As a noun it ordinarily means the wane of the moon.

33. myrten, def.—indef. form. "The poetic form myrt
(-en) also exists. The form here used is the definite (cf.
lyran), whether of myrt or myrten.

34. tröskelen, present form is tröskeln.

42. komma skall, order archaic and Scriptural.

46... The idea of a pestilence "purifying” the nations is
the remoter one of ridding the countries of undesirable and
vicious elements.

70. Modern form, basunljud.

79. fordne (for forne or forna) in this modernized text
is left intact out of respect for the supérfluous rhymes
