(fordne — vordne) found in the middle of this couplet.
Such redundancy of rhymes is found in a number of stanzas,
viz., st. 1, 5-6, står — när; st. 2, 10-11, sången — gången;
st. 10, 3-4, spörje — sörje, and in one of the stanzas here
omitted,
"och pressat bröst i en suckan brister
som ingen tröst i all världen får.”-
In connection with this plethora of rhyme the surfeit of
repetition in this poem may be noted. Some of the faults
which vitiate the claim of this poem to classic rank are,
first, a too lavish recurrence of phrases. words, or sounds.
pure and simple; in the second place, a frequent interlacing
of pairs of rhymes so similar as to produce a monotonous
sequence of like sounds. From one of the omitted stanzas
we quote the line, "en egen egendom I ej egen” (ägen) as
perhaps the most bizarre example of disagreeable assonance
to be found in Swedish verse. Note also how exactly the
lines of this couplet (st. 8) duplicate each other
phonetically:
"de herrar fordne i höga loft,
de äro vordne en handfull stoft.”
Many of the twenty-one stanzas not here reproduced are
replete with repetition, thus:
Du förste Gustav! Du andre. store!
Du frie, modige Engelbrekt!
och alla visa
och alla ömma,
som mänskor prisa
och mänskor — glömma!
This overplus of repetition, monotonous assonance of vowels,
and resemblance in different pairs of rhymes is best
instanced in the ninth stanza of the complete poem:
"I låga jorden, på den de vandra,
på den de strida om rang och arv,
jag blandar släkterna om varandra,
jag lägger tiderna varv på varv.
I djupa natten ’
ej följer prakten
och icke skatten
och icke makten.
En gång de ägas, en annan gång
de andras äro som laga fång.”
Other groups of rhymes rather perplexing to the eye and
distressing to the ear: "Öster — väster — röster — gäster”
(st. 1); "beskärde — borde — lärde — gjorde” (st. 9); skå-
