out attention, K. F. E. Björling (1839—1910) performed his work principally
as a geometrician at Lund and is also important as an author of text-books.
A. V. Backlund (b. 1845) carried out highly valued investigations in geometry
and the theory of partial differential equations, before he definitely went over
to mechanics and mathematical physics. Among the followers of these
mathematicians, who have also devoted attention to geometrical questions, may be
mentioned T. Brodén (b. 1857; professor at Lund), A. Wiman (b. 1865; now
professor at Uppsala), and C. V. Oseen (b. 1879; now professor at Uppsala).
All three have, however, done their principal work in other branches of
mathematics. Brodén has, for instance, devoted himself especially to the theory of real
functions, while Wiman has directed his attention to higher algebra and to the
theory of whole transcendental functions. Work has been carried out by G.
Bucht (b. 1884; lecturer at Uppsala), in conjunction with Wiman, on the theory
of equations solvable with radicals.
