STUDIES IN 1743 AND 1744. 1093
of the Economia Regni Animalis, published in 1740, he ought to
have passed to Pa IV and V, which were to treat of "the genital
organs of males and females, and the formation of the embryo in the
uterus," but instead of doing so he skipped over Parts III, IV, and
V, and took up at once Part VI of his programme, which was to
treat of "the organs of the external senses." His reasons for doing
so he states in full in the prologue to no. 73, p. 941, to which we
refer the reader.
VI. From the beginning of May to the beginning of July, 1744,
we accordingly find Swedenborg busily engaged on what promises
to be Part III of the "New Series" of the Regnum Animale (see
Document 313, no. 77, p. 944). During the whole of this time he
made only a few entries in his "Private Diary for 1744;" but, on the
other hand, we find a considerable number of allusions to dreams,
visions, and supernatural admonitions in the text of Codex 58, (see
Document 310, p. 859), which describes the contents of no. 73, p. 941,
and of no. 76, p. 943, in Document 313, to which we refer the
reader for further particulars.
A. On p. 14 of Codex 58 we read in reference to the chapter
on "Sense in General," as follows, "This matter to p. 19 ought not
to come first, but the parts investigated by the analytic method ;
this and several other things belong to the Epilogue at the end; I
have been thus informed in a dream" (Detta ämne til 19, kommer
ingalunda förut, ty delar emot viam analyticam, utan detta med
mehra til Epilogo eller efteråt; jag var so åtwarnad i dröm.”
Compare the "Critical Notes" of Dr. Im. Tafel in the Appendix,
p. 236 of his edition of the Regnum Animale, Vol. IV (no. 73 of
Document 313). The following four pages are also marked thus :
"Afterwards in the Epilogue" (efteråt i Epilogo).
B. On p. 84 (Dr. Im. Tafel’s edition, p. 82) we find, "It is to
be observed that in agreement with a nocturnal admonition (secun
dum admonitionem noct.) I must refer to my philosophical Principia,
and consider the light, heavy, and active properties which are there
described in sundry places ; I was told that thus it would be
granted to me to fly wherever I please."
C. On p. 144 (Dr. Im. Tafel’s edition, p. 164) we read, "But
these things are too deep, and have to be explained by a number
of other things, wherefore a mere outline of them is given here.
These things, however, are still obscure, and perhaps not true. I
saw a fly. It went away, and I retraced my steps. The subject of
truths, in accordance with admonitions, was taken up again. The
fly, as I believe, went away against my wish, and I could scarcely
bear it."
