1122 NOTES TO VOLUME II.
18. "I have been so now for four years, that I neither think
nor speak anything from myself." April 21, 1749 (S. D. 4228).
From April 1749 to April 1745 is exactly four years . 1745.
II. Thus far Swedenborg declared uniformly in favour of
1745, as the year when he was admitted into the spiritual
world; henceforth, until 1766, we shall find him just as con
stantly deciding in favour of 1744.
•
19. "From eight to nine years I was in constant consort
with spirits and angels" (S. D. 4618).
No. 4573 was written on August 6, 1752, so that no. 4618
must have been written very soon after, either in 1752 or 1753.
Eight or nine years from 1752 or 1753 yields • . . 1744.
All the passages to which we have thus far referred, have
been quoted from the author’s posthumous MSS. , most of those
that follow are cited from the works as published by himself.
The question now arises whether the dates contained in his
printed works refer to the year of their publication, or to the
time when they were written. The answer which Swedenborg
himself gives to this question is, that the time of writing and
not of publication must be taken ; for both his works on
"Heaven and Hell," and on the "Earths in the Universe," bear
the imprint of 1758, and in the former he declares that for
"thirteen," and in the latter that for "twelve" years he had
been in consort with spirits. And, again, in no. 157 of the
"True Christian Religion," he speaks of "twenty-six," and in
no. 851 of "twenty-seven" years during which he enjoyed that
remarkable spiritual intercourse. From the fact, therefore, that
Swedenborg furnishes different dates in the works on “Heaven
and Hell" and the "Earths in the Universe," which were
published in the same year, it follows that these works were
written at different periods, and that the dates of the open
ing of his spiritual sight must be computed from the time
when these works were written, and not when they were
published. And, on the other hand, from the fact that the
author mentions two different dates in the beginning and end
of the "True Christian Religion," it follows that the first
portion of that work was written a whole year before its last
portion; and, again, it confirms the idea that in computing
the dates of the opening of his spiritual sight, we must not
take into consideration the time of publication, but the time
when they were written.
29. "Continuously for nine years I was in the consort of
spirits and angels" (A. C. 6200).
