art och för denna åsigt anför en mängd bevis, grundade dels
på af honom sjelf gjorda jämförelser af skallar af båda
formerna, dels af iakttagelser gjorda af Scammon ocli Elliott på
lefvande individer.
Alien 1 skiljer sin O. obesus (111.) från O. rosmarus
hufvud-sakligen på följande: »The tusks are longer and thinner,
generally more convergent, with much greater inward
curvature; the mystacial bristles shorter and smaller, and the
muzzle relatively deeper and broader, in correlation with the
greater breadth and
depth of the skull
anteriorly..» »The
chief external
difference between the
two species appears
to consist in the
shape of the muzzle
and the size and
form of bristly
nose-pad, which has a
vertical breadth at
least one-fourth
greater than in the
Atlantic species.
Very important
differences between the
two species are
exhibited in the skull.»

l:o) högre och bredare nos;
2:o) längre, tunnare och mer konvergenta betar;
3:o) kortare skäggborst.
Beträffande nosens höjd och bredd vill jag endast anmärka^
att den beror af motsvarande utveckling af skallens främre
del. Derom kommer jag att tala längre fram. Betarnes längd,
tjocklek och riktning äro, som bekant, mycket variabla. Ho-
