Today the Swedish language is still the language of the
heart of the congregation.
In 1892 the old church building was moved half
a block east. It was remodeled and a new steeple
and a basement were built. In 1909 a north wing
was built so as to make room for the new pipe organ
that was installed at a cost of $2,000, donated by
the young ladies of the congregation.
In 1909 the congregation celebrated the 50th
anniversary. During that time 560 children have been
baptized, 364 confirmed, 81 conples married and 219
deaths. Total membership, 354. Value of church
property including parsonage, $15,000.
The charter members that are still living are:
Fred Johnson, Nels P. Nelson, Mrs. Eric Dalander,
Mrs. Swen Dalander, Mrs, John Dalander, Mrs. Eric
Söderlund, Mrs. Peter Sjölund, Mrs. Chas. Lebo and
Mrs. J. G. Mårtenson.
In 1904 Iowa Conference decided to establish an
Old People’s Home. Through the efforts of Rev. C.
E. Benson the business men of Madrid and the
congregation raised 1200 dollars for the amount of
which 4 acres of land was bought in the
northwest part of the town. This tract of land was
donated to the conference as a location for the home.
In 1906 the conference accepted the offer and located
the home in Madrid. In 1908 a brick building 36x100
feet, two-story and stone basement, was built with
modern improvements, steam heated and electric
lighted. At present there are 22 inmates. Sister
Christina Månson of the Deaconess Institute, Omaha,
Nebr., is the matron. In 1910, on the death of Hon.
