C. J. A. Ericson, it was announced that the late
senator had willed the home $5,000. The value of
the home with building, land and equipment is
estimated at 17,000 dollars. At last Madrid or
former Swede Point secured one of the institutions
of the conference.
The beginning of the Swedish free mission
congregation dates back to 1870. S. G. Bengtson, P. A.
Bengtson and Jonas Johnson with their families were
the founders of this congregation. These families
belonged to the Evangelical mission movements in
Sweden. They came from Sweden in 1870 and
located at Swede Point. These families wTere visited
by Rev. C. A, Björk, who at that time lived at
Swede Bend. The meetings were held at the homes
of said families. Later on they were held in the
different schoolhouses. In 1872 Rev. John Peterson
organized this congregation. During the first years
there was no local pastor, but traveling ministers
visited this congregation at different times and
intervals. In 1875 Eric Hedlund became the first local
pastor. The following pastors have had charge of
the congregation: Örn Kranberg, Kels Wickström,
A. Wickström, Alex Klint, A. L, Stone, David
Anderson, Carl Hedlund, O. F. Dahlberg, O, F, Lovine,
C. M. Anderson, and the present pastor, L. E.
Coleman, The present church ’was built in 1882, costing
&bout $2,000. At present a new modern church is
Projected, the estimated cost being about $6,000.

From a few members in the beginning, there has
been a constant growth and advancement. Through
the influence of the many sermons that have been
