deacon of the Swedish Lutheran congregation for 30
years. Peter Armstrong, born in 18.17 in
Östergötland, located in Swede Point in 1857 and died at the
same place in 1901. lie was a wealthy farmer. He
took great interest in the welfare of the Swedish
Lutheran congregation. He donated the beautiful
altar painting “Christ on the Cross.” Wm. Johnson,
born in 1839 in Sweden, located at Swede Point about
1859. Engaged first in farming, afterwards he went
into business at Swede Point. He was in business
for 29 years. He died at Madrid in 1902. J. H.
Sundberg, born in 1830, in Dalsland, located in Swede
Point in 1878, and died at the same place in 1908.
He was deacon for 21 years in the Swedish Lutheran
Church and Sunday school superintendent for 10
years. To his memorial his children donated the
beautiful art window in the Swedish Lutheran
Church. P. A. Alsin, bom in 1827, in Östergötland,
emigrated in 1852, went to California by way of New
Orleans, walked across the Isthmus of Panama,
located in Swede Point in 1866 and died at the same
place in 1911. He was a wealthy farmer. A. P.
Westerberg, born in 1840 in Östergötland, located
in Swede Point in 1873 and died at the same place
in 1909. He installed the Madrid electric light and
power plant in the town of Madrid. He was one of
the progressive and enterprising farmers. He
installed the electric light plant on his own capital.
Our Swedish pioneers had many hard struggles
against want and deprivation, but nevertheless, they
’were happy in their toils and hardships. They did
Hot suffer from pride, vanity and big feelings. Envy,
