and speaking in its behalf on that occasion.
Other Activities.—Early last spring a movement
was set on foot in Chicago to put the Swedish on
a par with other foreign languages as an elective
study in the high schools, and the fact may be here
noted that a majority of the initiators of the
movement were Chicago members of our society, Mr.
Henry S. Henschen serving as chairman, and your
secretary as the secretary of the committee. A
petition was drawn, signed by many Chicagoans of
Swedish descent, and presented to the Board of
Education, the latter postponing action to await the
result of experiments with other languages as
elective studies. Though indirectly and unofficially, this
was our first effort to promote the study of our
mother tongue in American schools, and this being
one of the objects of our society, we may well watch
the outcome with interest, or better still, exert our
influence to secure favorable action.
Also in line with our objects, the Society for the
Advancement of Scandinavian Study was organized
last summer at the University of Chicago, by
teachers of Scandinavian languages from various
universities. Interest in the cause prompted your secretary
and several other members of our society to attend
and take part in the organization. The society was
launched with 80 charter members, Prof. Julius E.
Olson of the University of Wisconsin being elected
president and Prof. Geo. T. Flom of the University
of Illinois, secretary.
In closing my report, I would express my earnest
hope that the Swedish Historical Society may re-
