4. The loan of books from the Swedish
Historical collection will be subject to the same
regulations as operate in the case of other
books in the State Historical library.
5. Duplicates may be exchanged or sold and
proceeds used in building up the library of the
Swedish Historical Society. This shall be done
on condition agreed upon by the superintendent
of the Minnesota Historical Society and
the president of our society.
In 1918 the library of the Swedish Historical Society
had been moved from Evanston, Ill., to the Denkmann
Memorial Library, at Augustana College, Rock Island,
Ill., and according to an agreement with this institution
the collection could not be removed from this library
until 1923, when our Society would have the option to
transfer it to some other place. Mainly because of a
misunderstanding due to the existence of two and
dissimilar copies of the written agreement, negotiations
with the Board of Directors of Augustana College
dragged out for several months. It should be said that
throughout these negotiations the directors of Augustana
College showed the utmost courtesy and a disposition
to waive any right they had in the premises so as not
in any way obstruct our board in its desire to carry
out plans that were thought best for our Society. The
Augustana Book Concern at Rock Island, in a thoroughly
efficient and satisfactory manner, took care of
the packing and shipping of the collection, which filled
forty-one large boxes. The total expense for packing,
freight, and drayage was approximately §236.00.
